Appoquinimink Students Can Participate in FREE Flu Vaccination
Consent forms must be returned by Friday, October 23
On Monday, October 19, students in the Appoquinimink School District
received information packets and consent forms to take home about the
H1N1 flu vaccine. Appoquinimink, like other districts in the state, has
agreed to participate in Delaware's FREE School Vaccination Program.
The Vaccination Program is VOLUNTARY and requires parent/guardian
consent. Forms must be reviewed, signed and returned to your student's
school before dismissal on Friday, October 23, 2009 in order to
participate.
Information about the Delaware School Vaccination Program:
- The program is voluntary.
- The vaccine is free to students in our schools.
- Grade K-5 students will receive a nasal spray vaccine.
- Grade 6-12 students will receive a flu shot vaccine.
- Students under age 10 will require a second dose approximately
4 weeks after the first dose. Both vaccines will be free and
administered by Public Health Officials in cooperation with our schools.
- Public Health will NOT be vaccinating preschool students. If
you are the parent of a preschooler, you will need to go through your
pediatrician's office.
- Consent forms must be returned to your child's school by
Friday, October 23.
- Students with certain health risk factors may be unable to
receive the vaccine at school and will be referred to their private
physician for immunization.
- School Nurses will serve as our coordinator with Public Health
officials.
- Schools have not yet received finalized schedules for
administering the vaccine. We will report back to families when this
information is confirmed.
- We are unable to allow parents to be present during the
vaccination. If you feel you need to be with your child, please seek
vaccination through your private provider.
If you have specific questions regarding the vaccine as it relates to
your child, we encourage you to consult with your personal physician or
contact the Dept. of Public Health at 800-282-8672.
Parents will receive an automated phone message reminding them to return
their Consent Forms by Friday, October 23.
**School-age children have been identified as a high risk group. The
Delaware Division of Public Health has communicated that vaccinating
children at school is one way to ensure that every child has the
opportunity to receive the vaccine. In this way, both children and the
school community are more protected from the spread of the disease.**
