The Appoquinimink School District, located in southern New Castle County, Delaware, serves more than 8,100 students in grades PK-12. At Appoquinimink, students, parents, educators and the community share a common vision about high achievement, a fact which has helped our students earn one of the best academic records in the state.
2006-2007 District Report Card
As Delaware's fastest growing school system (approximately 500 new pupils per year), we've learned to thrive on change. This year, we celebrate the opening of the Alfred G. Waters Middle School, named after visionary principal and former Assistant Superintendent Dr. Alfred G. Waters. Located at the Cedar Lane Campus in Middletown, the school will be home to the Ninth Grade Academy (NGA) until our new high school is ready to open.
New athletic fields at Middletown High School and Appoquinimink High School have also been completed. While grass must still mature on the baseball and softball fields, students are already practicing on the all-weather surfaces designed to accommodate football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, track & field, and tennis. Both locations feature a beautifully-designed field house with team changing rooms, concession area and press box.
The 2007-2008 school year also marks the introduction of world languages and culture (Japanese, Chinese, French and Spanish) at the elementary school level, making Appoquinimink the first public school system in Delaware to adopt strategically important 21st Century languages in every elementary, middle and high school.
In addition to developing cultural awareness, an International Education Task Force is working to define the critical skills students will need to be successful global citizens. These 21st Century skills include: essential thinking and reasoning, the ability to work collaboratively, learn new technologies, communicate electronically, and develop a positive work ethic. They will soon be incorporated into all our work with children.
Two more referendum-funded enhancements, activity buses and a career counseling center, have also become a reality. After-hours transportation is now available for middle and high school students allowing them to take advantage of a host of extracurricular activities including band, drama, sports and school-based clubs. At Middletown High School, our new Career Counseling Center is filled with the latest resources and staffed by a skilled professional whose job allows him to help students research college and post-secondary careers.
Meanwhile, construction of Appoquinimink High School (team mascot, the Jaguar) continues on time and on budget. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the community will have its first look at the new facility on May 17, when AHS will host the district's 10th annual Education Fair. While classes at the new school won't begin until Fall 2008, students who live in the Jaguars feeder pattern will have an opportunity to compete on AHS freshman athletic teams beginning this year.
Two more construction projects, an Early Childhood Center and an Elementary School, are also moving forward. Our new Early Childhood Center will open in Fall 2008, at the Townsend Elementary School Campus. Later this fall, we will announce a location for a new elementary school set to open in 2009. Finally, work is about to begin on our Teacher Training Center. By the end of 2008, that expansion will be completed, allowing us more and better access to train and educate staff.
As you can see, a busy year awaits us. Our goal, as always, is to make it a time of unparalleled success for ALL our students.
In closing, let us note that parents are partners in our district. That means we want and need to hear back from you regularly. So please be sure to attend open house events and conferences. Take advantage of one of our Parents Academy workshops. Communicate with your child's teacher on a regular basis, and consider attend Board of Education Meetings the second Tuesday of each month. We're looking forward to a great school year and to working with you to make Appoquinimink the pride of Delaware.
