No school for students February 9-16
School Calendar changed due to bridge repairs

A representative from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers joined us at Appoquinimink's Board of Education Meeting in mid-October. He explained to our board and members of the public that Summit Bridge (Middletown, DE) must be closed for a week of repairs in February. The closure creates insurmountable challenges to the safe and orderly transportation of our students. Since most grades were already scheduled for several days of vacation that week, the safest and most logical response was to cancel school for students for the entire week.

The Curriculum Department will be working to develop meaningful staff development programs for teachers and other educational staff that week. Parent Conferences and Kindergarten Registration will continue as planned.

We do not anticipate having to add any additional days onto the student or staff calendar to accommodate the closure.

Plans are in place to inform parents. Our Superintendent will be announcing the closure in a letter going out to parents in October. The local newspaper, The Middletown Transcript, will be running a story. Notices will appear in school and district newsletters, on all websites, on school signage (January), and an automated call will be the final reminder the week before the closure. By informing staff & parents as quickly as possible, we hope to provide everyone with ample time to adjust to the change.

February 2009 Revised Dates:

Feb. 9-10 NO SCHOOL for Students, Staff Development
Feb. 11-12 NO SCHOOL for Students, Parent Conferences - AM & PM sessions
and Kindergarten Registration
Feb. 13 NO SCHOOL for Students, Staff Development
Feb. 16 NO SCHOOL for Students or Staff, Offices closed for President's Day

We appreciate your support and understanding in this matter. If you have questions or concerns, please direct them to the principal in your building or email AppoSchool@appo.k12.de.us.
