Justin Perillo and Chelsea Davis have been
named state players of the year in boys and girls basketball. The two also head
the 2009 All-State basketball teams made public
today by the Delaware Sportswriters & Broadcasters
Association.
The player of the year awards and the All-State
teams are based on voting by the state's head coaches.
Perillo is a 6-foot-4 senior at Tatnall School who
averaged 24.9 points and 15.9 rebounds per game this season, when the Hornets
went 23-2 and reached the semifinals of the state
tournament. Perillo accepted a football scholarship from the University of Maine
in February, and also plays baseball for Tatnall.
Rounding out the boys first team are four more
seniors: Tyshawn Bell (6-7, Caesar Rodney), Charles Burley (5-8, Glasgow),
Daiquane Peterson (6-2, A.I. du Pont) and Paul
Reynolds (6-4, Smyrna).
Reynolds is a first-team selection for the second
straight year. He also made honorable mention in 2007 at Christiana, which won
the state title that year. Perillo and Peterson
were second-team choices a year ago, and Bell earned honorable mention in the
two seasons prior to this one.
The 6-foot-3 Davis finished her Middletown
career with 1,912 points, and also more than 1,000 rebounds. She averaged 22.2
points and 13.5 rebounds per game this season. She has signed with Florida State, and was also a
first-team selection her sophomore and junior years (making honorable mention as
a freshman). Joining her on the first
team this year are seniors Jaquetta May (5-10, Delcastle) and Dara Taylor (5-7,
Caravel), junior Telisha Turner (5-7, Glasgow) and sophomore Betnijah Laney
(6-0, Smyrna).
May, who helped guide Delcastle to a win in the
championship game over Middletown, was a third-team pick as a sophomore. She
made second team last season. Taylor was also on
the second team last season, with Laney and Tuner third-team choices a year ago.
Additionally, Hodgson senior Ericka Furrowh made third team this
season, after being an honorable mention her first
three seasons.
