American Intl. Math Exam Results
- March 21, 2009

Middletown High student James Shores advances to American International Math Examination

In March, more than 413,000 students worldwide (representing 5,100 participating schools) took part in American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). The contests -- which are dedicated to strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation's youth -- are recognized as one of the premier vehicles for recognizing and rewarding excellence in mathematics.

The AMC contests are for everyone -- from the average student who enjoys numeracy, to young people beginning to demonstrate special gifts in the field. The top 10,000 test takers (2.4 percent) earn an invitation to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) on March 17. From this group, approximately 500 students will be invited to become part of the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) in early May.

In Delaware, 755 students took part in the AMC this year, including 64 teens (32 freshmen, 32 juniors and/or seniors) from Middletown High. Based on their performance, eighteen were chosen to advance to the next level of competition. Among the "winners" was Middletown High Senior James Shores. As a result of his high score, James took part in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination on March 17.  Results from that test (15 question, 3-hour exam) will be used to determine if he earns an invitation to participate in the USA Mathematical Olympiad.

The AMC also includes team recognition. (The "team" is comprised of the top three scorers from each school).  Middletown High's team finished 5th out of 13, our best to date. Top scorers were James Shores, Charlotte Lin, and a tie: Vincent Salemink and Marisa Babb (a junior). Steven Davis (another junior) missed joining the team by 3 points (out of 150 possible). Ben Wall (a freshman) missed being invited to the next level by 2 questions (out of 25), which means that next year the Cav's AMC team will be especially strong.
